I have moments of brief, fleeting clarity that expose how truly crazy I am. For example, I had to walk home from work tonight leaving at roughly 11:40 p.m. It was under 30 degrees Fahrenheit and there was a foot of snow and slush on the ground. No problem, it’s only a mile and a half from the newspaper to my house. On the way a very nice girl stopped and asked me if I needed a ride home. For half a second I considered telling her no because I wasn’t that far away. Then I got in her car. Parental rules violation aside, it was the obvious move. She was in shock that I had walked as far as I did. It’s just a normal thought to me. I couldn’t get home any other way, so I walked. To some degree I’ve accepted that I’m always going to be a little off and do things differently than other people, but it’s in moments like these that I understand how out of step I really am.
It’s said that “liquor before beer, you’re in the clear.” And “beer before liquor, never sicker.” What if you drink beer then liquor then beer then some more liquor? It makes you a drunkard.
You can’t just text someone at 1 in the morning and not respond when they ask what’s going on, it worries people and drives them a little crazy, you know who you are :-P
SPOILER ALERT
I will deal with some plot here, so if you haven’t seen the movie, stop what you are doing and go see it, then you can come back and read.
The entire film seemed to be about the play of light and shadow, particularly when Bond is in Shanghai, the London Underground, and once they get back to the Skyfall mansion. That end scene was a lighting masterpiece between the dreary Scotland skies, sketchy old-school electric lights, and the fire. Both M and some of her superiors in the British government mention the notion of fighting a war “in the shadows,” and the film’s balance of darkness and clever use of lighting illustrate the concept perfectly.
One other point is the constant use of symmetrical framing in the shots. Whether its church pews or a parking lot, the film is littered with shots that divide the frame down the middle and set up nearly mirror images on both sides. In a way this could represent the difference between Bond and Javier Bardem’s character. Both are current or former MI-6 agents of the highest quality, but one remains fiercely loyal to his country and the concept of “good,” while the other has abandoned the crown to muck things up.
